Who's to Blame??????

Imagine parents being fined money when their child is tardy or absent or actually being graded by teachers. Is that hard to imagine? Well, watch the video. What do you think about what is being discussed. It seems that several states are actually doing these things or talking about doing them! What do you think of it? Is it fair to hold parents accountable for a student's performance at school? Why or why not? If parents were held accountable in some way would that change your performance in school?

Madi... I sometimes blame parents for kids being late to school. That being said maybe if parents get fined for their kids being tardy to school, they will tighten up and get their children to school on time. I don't think that parents are accountable for all of a students performances in school, because kids need to learn to be responsible.

Lauren...I do not think that parents should be blamed for their child's actions outside of the house. Parents do not necessarily have control over their children once they leave to attend school. Parents should be informed of the child's behavior but they definitely should not be fined or charged. I think that some of these actions are rather drastic. Kids should be able to maintain themselves during school hours.

I don't think it's the paretns faught for how kids act in school. I think it's up the to children on how then desicde to act and show up to class. Or to pass a test. I think parents can help to push thier children in doing better, but it's all up to the kids in how they act.

I don’t think it’s fair to fine the parents for their children failing. Some kids don’t have the ability to learn like others. I do agree that if parents took more charge and paid attention to what their children were doing that grades would be better.

LaKendra... I don't think that parents being puished for thier child's actions in school is fair. No matter how hard some childern are pushied to do well they still will not strive to do thier best. The parents are not always the people who need to be blamed ! I try my best to work hard in school and I would continue to do the same if my parents were to be graded on and accused for my actions.

ERnie.......Sometimes it is the parents fault for the kids action at school. Most of the time the parent can not make the kid perform how they want them to. A kid is going to do what a kid wants no matter what other people try to get them to do.

Chris says… I think that some parents should be blamed for their students bad grades. For one this is probably focused more on elementary and middle school students cause really when you get to high school you’re on your own. But some parents should check there kids homework and make them study once in awile.

Tee: I don't think parents should be blamed for their children's learning problems. I wouldn't change how I act in school if a law was in place because I think I'm a pretty good student.

Robbie Says.. I dont think thats fair at all. Its not the parents fault that their kids are late. They dont have any control of it.

Ashleys says... I don't think they should blame everything on the parents but the parents are the ones who raise and bring up the kids. Like the behavior, if your kid is a trouble maker then your going to get a of fines. When your in High school it's your choice rather to be late, early, or a no show. In high school you have people who can drive sop they can ditch or not. Middle school you can't drive so either parents made you late or you miss the bus. Not everyone is perfect in school with grades. Teachers in these states might be juding the kids a little to hard. Parents are not their with them, so they can't be blame for everything.

Sheron…says I honestly think it should be held accountable by the student because the parents aren’t getting the degrees. I feel if parents were to be held accountable there would be a lot more troubles as in the parent believing they can teach their kid everything like what the school won’t teach you and things schools don’t want you to know.

Kristin says... I can understand fining parents only if their child is excessively tardy or absent. Unless the child drives to school the parent is responsible for getting him/her there on time. If it's only a few tardies I don't see an issue. It is fair to hold parents accountable for their child's performance at school, because it's a reflection of what goes on at home. If my parents were held accountable I wouldn't have to change my performance. Even without them being accountable if I get in trouble at school I know things are not going to be good when I get home.

Sarah...At times, absences and tardies cannot be avoided. Parents and students should not be held accountable if the absences are for important reasons. It would be silly to fine parents for these reasons.

Destiny saids.... That is crazy. If that ever happen to this school or they ever approve it I will go mad. If my mom would had to pay for something so stupid this would be the end of the world....seriously.I think they just want more money out of us. Who ever made that up must of been very bored.

Thomas says: i think that the parents have little lame. If the child truly wanted to learn, they would find a way. parents are only there to provide that initial "Shove" into success.

Matt: The parents aren't to blame. Kids will do what they please regardless of what their parents do or say. However, the parents do have influence.

If that was truely true, my mother would probably be broke. I be late mostly everyday. That is very hard to imagine. If that do happen, then they need to wait till i get out of school.

Parents are to blame because they can put the hammer on the child. I think discipline is needed for children. If your child does not do good punish them in any way necessary that is not too taboo. I myself will use a switch on my child if I have to and I will make them cut it themselves. Parents who are not good need to be punished heavily. Too often are children losing discipline and that is the fault of the parents. Discipline is key and without discipline society will divulge into anarchy.

While I agree that parents have to be held responsible, I do not think that a fine or charge toward the parents is a good idea. The real question however is why everyone is so focused on who and why? Figuring out what has caused the problem will NOT solve the problem. I think instead of trying to figure out why a child's education has gone awry we should be trying to figure out how to FIX the problem!
