Not The Way to Teach

Have you ever felt totally humiliated by a teacher or any one in a position of authority? I am sure that a phone call home is bad enough. But can you imagine "wearing" a discipline note home? Seems that this recently happened in Miami. Check out this video:

http://news.yahoo.com/video/miamicbs4-15750840/teacher-criticized-for-how-she-sent-a-note-home-24445195

Do you feel that the teacher was out of line? What could have been done differently? How would you have felt if you were the child? Do you think the shirt was ruined?

There is never a good reason for a teacher to humiliate a student in front of his or her peers. I think we all have been embarrassed by a teacher at some point in our lives, and those are moments that we rarely forget. As a teacher, I do my best to be conscious of students' feelings, and I hope I have not humiliated one of my students. As a parent, I would be furious if Braydon came home from school upset or embarrassed by something the teacher had done. Children and teenagers have to deal with enough hurt and embarrassment from their peers as it is. I would, however, like to hear the teacher's side of the story, but from the teacher herself, not the reporter. It has been my experience that students aren't always 100% honest with their parents. I do place blame on the teacher regardless of whether or not the story actually happened the way it was told. If she was concerned about whether or not the disciplinary notes were making it home, she should have called the parent rather than stapling a note to the child's shirt. Doesn't she care about fashion??? :)

Lauren...I do feel as though the the teacher in Miami was out of line by attaching a discipline note to a 7 year old boy. If the boy was not taking his notes home the teacher could have called his parents. I would have been extremely humiliated if my teacher would have put me out in front of the class like that. I'm sure his classmates joked on him. The teacher should have been much more professional in her actions and I agree with the mother of the 7 year old boy.

Madi says... I feel like teachers should never make students feel embarrassed and especially make a kid wear a note home! The teacher in my opinion was way out of line. She could have just called home or sent the note home with the child. I would be very angry and upset if my child came home with a note stapled to his/her shirt. The shirt might have been ruined.

Everybody has been humiliated by their teacher at some point in their life. It teaches us a leason however teachers can get out of line at times. This teacher inflicted an embarrassing punishment which could be harsh for a seven year old boy. The teacher could've called home to the parents or emailed them rather than stapling a note to his shirt. I doubt the shirt was ruined.

Robbie says.. That was mean to do that to the little kid. I think that teacher should get fired for doin that to the little kid. If she would have done that to me I just would've took it off.

Matt: I don't believe her to be out of line, she just wanted to make sure that the note got home to his mother. However, I do feel that the situation could have been dealt with in a different manner than the way in which it was. She could have just as easily called his mother and still have the same effect rather than openly degrading the child in front of his peers.

Tee- I personally believe that this story may be a little bit blown out of proportion and is a big misunderstanding. The teacher may have been out of line doing so, but the whole situation was exaggerated almost. She should have just contacted his mom to make sure she was getting the notes. If I were the child, however, I would be pretty irritated.

Kristin says... Most people have been humiliated by a teacher at some point in their lives. I can't imagine being forced to wear a note all day. The teacher was out of line, and the boy's mother deserved an apology. If I was that little boy I would have been embarrassed and upset. I don't think the shirt was ruined, but that wasn't the issue.

Sheron says…yes I think she was out of line she could have simply sent him to the office or called home like regular teachers. But making him wear a discipline note on his shirt is kind of making fun of him.

I think the teacher was out of line by pinning the descipline note on his shirt. I think that just because the child acted up in class and was talking, does not give the teacher the right to do what she did. If I was the child I would not have cared that much, because things like that don't bother me.

I am sure that every kid has been humiliated by a teacher. The teacher could have handled things different. If she was worried the notes were going home maybe she should have called his parents. If I was the child I have no clue how I would have felt inside.

Chris says… I have never been humiliated by a teacher before. But I have had a phone call home and got yell at by my mother. I’m sure almost every student has been called out or humiliated by their teacher.

LaKendra... What that teacher did was way out of line ! She shouldn't have embarrassed the student by doing that. Who staples a note to a child's shirt? If that was my child I would have been very upset, and I would have removed my child from the class and made sure that the teacher knew how I felt about what she did. I know that the the boy was very upset about having to deal with that in front of the whole class.

Ashley says... I think the teacher was out of line. She could have gave him time out, no reccess, call home and talk to the parent in person. The mother got his notes but I think humiliating the boy was not right. It's bad enough when the teacher calls you out loud. I think a teacher has no right to put things you dont want on your shirt or any clothing. That probably really hurt the boy's feelings of how you staple a note saying you were bad, so that people could see it. If I was the child I wouldn't let the teacher touch me and staple a bad note on my shirt. I think it's wrong and I would be mad about it. He will probably have staple holes in his shirt, but doing this to a little boy can cause a lot of hurt!

Jonathan says... That's embarrasing for the little kid having to wear a note all day long. And then the kids making fun of him that's even more embarrasing. If the teacher needed to talk to the parent she should've called her.

Ernie says yes I have been humiliated before by a teacher and I will never forget it. This teacher should not have did this to this student. The teacher should be fired.

Downing said: There is no excuse for a teacher to willingly embarrass a student. While I may be upset with something a student does, I try my best to make sure that I do not embarrass or humiliate someone. However, we do not have the teacher’s side of the story in the article. But is obvious that what was done was just plain wrong.

I never been embarsed by a teacher before. When you get in high school you don't really care if a teacher offend you. Well I don't. Putting the note on the little boy was wrong. If I was the parent i would have said something as well. She could have just called the parent, instead of doing what she had did.

I think the teacher was out of line. She could have just handed him the note instead of stapling it on his shirt. I would have felt embarrassed and mad if I was that child. I don't think the shirt was ruined, I just think it was messed up for her to staple a note on the child's shirt in front of the class.

It was not right for the teacher to humiliate that boy like that. She should have called home or had a parent teacher convrence instead of what she did. I would have felt missed palced because a child will be a child adults need to understand that is how they act. However i don't think that the shirt was ruiend with a few minny holes because boys would ruin cloths so i feel that the shirt would have been ok

I have never been humilated by a teacher before. I think that the teacher was out of line. It was wrong for her to do that to the little boy, she could have called or asked the parent to come in. If that was my child I would have said something to the teacher to hear both sides of the story. The shirt was totally ruined, she did have to staple it to his shirt, obiviously she doesn't care about the money that was spent on clothes or clothes at all.

In a way she was because their is a better way to handle things as being an adult. Instead of her stapling it to his shirt she could have called home to let his parnets know that a note was going to be sent home. Well, If it was my child I can't really say how I would've handled it because I don't really know the whole story. I don't really think the shirt was ruined, but still I love clothes and shoes so that probably would have made me upset the most because thats what I brought with my money.

The teacher was way out of line in doing what she did. I would have given the child the note and called his home to see if his parents had received it; if they hadn’t the punishment would then rest in the hands of the parents. If I were in that situation the matter of the shirt would not have made me angry; the matter of not being given an apology is what would have made me so angry. The teacher was fully out of line in her actions. I would pull my child out immediately.

Having a note stapled to your shirt is as far away from embarrassment as we are from the sun. This is merely a parent who found an excuse to get hyped over pointless bull ****. I believe that if the child was doing something wrong then he deserves to be punished. If the mother didn't freak out so much then the kid would probably have changed his behavior. The mother however decided that she didn't want her "perfect" child to be subjected to "embarrassment". Thusly, the child probably believes that if he does something wrong then his mommy will come to his rescue. Way to go stultus asinus, you just put your "baby" on a path to delinquency, congratulations. I swear, it’s people like this that are making life so difficult in this once amazing country. I honestly HATE most of the people here. I wish we were still in the 50’s, where if you DIDN’T punch someone for doing you wrong then YOU would be the one in wrong. And no, I’ve never been embarrassed by a teacher because most of the time I don’t talk much, so HAHA.
