Suicide Due to Cyberbullying

Two Minnesota Eighth graders (Hayley Fentress and Paige Moravetz) recently committed suicide. They were good friends and may have killed themselves as part of a suicide pact. Something that seems to be obvious is that they may have been bullied and possibly cyberbullied. Let's watch the news story and interview with their families.

After viewing the interview, do you believe that the suicide of Hayley and Paige was due to cyberbullying? Do you believe that they were bullied, whether it was cyber or not? Do you know of anyone who has been cyberbullied, and was anything done about it? Is cyberbullying a problem at WHS?

I think cyberbullying is an overblown problem, based on society's fear of technology. It is the exact same thing as regular bullying, just with a "Scary" buzzword attached. You could write an article about "Cyber"puppies and elicit the same response of primal fear.

Matt: Cyberbullying is ridiculous. My idea is that if someone is ridiculing you to the point where you no longer wish to live, then don't respond to that person. Or, if you can, block them. It is so easy to keep people from getting in contact with you, that there would have to be something deeper than what is shown.

Jonathan says... Cyber bullying is a big problem and I think if your gonna run your mouth about somebody say it to their face don't be a punk and actin all big and bad. Suicide is a very serious thing, its not something that you joke about or play around with it can affect your family terribly bad.

Madi.. I think it depends on what age kids are in order for them to be able to deal with cyberbullying, it's easy to ignore people when you are a certain age but when you are younger it is a different story. I think that Hayley and Paige were probably bullied somewhat, and they were both depressed so they weren't able to deal with everything that was going on. I don't know if cyberbullying is a problem at WHS but more than likely it is.

Lauren...I do believe that bullying and cyberbulling played a major role in the death of the two Minnesota teens. I believe that their suicide was planned out and kept secret. There are cell phones, Facebook, and the Internet out there now, which allows people to be mocked more often. All high schools have a certain degree of bullying. However, Windsor High School is a rather friendly environment. I love to come to school everyday because most people seem to get along.

If the girls were already suffering from depression, it could've been a number of things that resulted in them killing themselves. They may have been bullied but I don't think that it was violent bullying. The girls shouldn't have let the comments get to them so hard.

ernie says...... I think this was due to cyber bullying. These are two pretty girls and i think other kids were jealous of them and tries to make them feel bad. They both had something to commit suicide over unfortunately. I dont believe they just did this for the fun of it. And to see them write notes before there suicide makes the situation seem a little fishy.

Robbie Says.. I think cyber bullying is wrong. I mean why pick on people just cause their different. Why caint kids just leave other kids alone that dont fit in so what they dont fit in, if they dont fit in then leave them alone. I think if you have problems that you shouldnt take it out on other people. I think they should make it a law that if you get cought cyberbullying that you should get in trouble with the law instead of noone doing nuthing about it.

I think that there is not much of a difference between cyberbullying and bullying at school. I think that people bully others because they are insucure about themselves. I do think the two girls suicides were caused by the bullying, but I also think they could have just igornaged it sall together.

Chris says… I think they where bullied, I also think it was due to cyber bullying. I really don’t know anyone who was cyber bullied but someone who hides in front of a computer or cell phone is just pathetic and shouldn’t be doing that if they can’t do it to there face. I also think it’s not a problem at Windsor High School.

Kristin says... I don't know if I believe that their suicide was due to cyberbullying. It could have been a part of it, but not only because of that. I can't say whether or not it's a problem at WHS. I have never been cyberbullyied but that doesn't mean that another student may not have been.

Ashley says... Cyberbulling is a big deal now. Those two teenagers were probably bullied on the internet and also at school. People's words can affecct people. People are being harsh and cruel now and they need to watch what they say, becasue it can cost a life. Like this saying if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all. It dosen't matter if you like them or not just don't talk to them. Those girls had great families and I feel bad for their lost. Friends will always follow after the other. They did plan the sucide event. They both wrote letters and were so close. Whatever the other girl felt so did the other. At our school we are pretty good. Their are a few kids who are unhappy but if you reach out to them anyone can make a diffrence in that person's life.

Tee: I think that anyone who commits suicide has much bigger issues than being cyberbullied. Just a couple of mere insults online shouldn't be enough to make a person want to kill themselves. I don't know if they were actually bullied, but it's terrible that they did that to themselves and their families. It's a waste of life. Suicide makes no sense at all; why kill yourself if you can just face your problems and fix them? I really don't get it. . . I never knew anyone who was cyberbullied, but if I did I would just tell them to get off the internet or ignore it. Who cares about some loser hiding behind a computer to pick a fight? The way I see it, if someone picks a fight with you online, you've already won the battle. You didn't try to start a fight online, so you're not pathetic. So just enjoy your victory and stop whining about a couple of insults that you could just ignore with one click of the mouse.

LaKendra... I think that there may have been an amount of bullying involved in the death of these two girls. It seems as if there was bullying at school as well as cyberbullying. The fact that they both suffered from depression may also have been a huge factor in this situation. I think that everyone has been bullied at some point whether it was in person or cyberbullying. It just depends on how the person takes it and the amount of bullying that has an effect on the outcome. Personally, I don't know anyone who has been seriouslly bullied and I hope that I never do. Sadly, bullying is something that students in every school have to go through.

I think that the suicide was really due to bullying. I say that because some people can just push you to the limit and you can just explode. I have never been bullyed. If i was ever i won't kill my self it might be the other way around. I know many people who has been bully before, i think it's just sad.

I think it was due to cyberbullying. I think they were bullied in both ways. I've known someone who was cyberbullied, and the person got in trouble for it by their parents.

Well to begain with i have never had pitty twords the people who have commited suicide. I feel like that because for one you should not let people get to you like that, who cares what they think, if you like what ever it is then yay you. Who cares what other people think its not up to them it is up to you and only you. Life is not worth killing yourself its just beyond stupid. It did seem like they were being bullyed and that was the answer to why they did it. However i feel that there was more to it then they think because i find it odd that they were both being picked on and thet they were both best friends and they hanged them self. They should have ccme to their family together and explainedwhat was going on instead of what they did.

I dont think that they committed sucide just of the bullying there had to be something more. Yes, I believe they were bullied. I dont know of anyone who has been bullied. I wouldn't know if it a problem at WHS, but people shouldn't be treated that way it's sad.

I do believe they did this due to bullying. Teens are very terrible to each other nowadays. I mean look at the Nikkol Wade incident. Suicide is not the answer for anyone. All suicide really is is when the pain exceeds the means for coping with the pain.

I don't think that cyberbullying was the only problem. I think that was a little more going in their life that they were not telling. Yes, I really do believe they were bullied because it happens everyday and everywhere. Yes, I do know of someone that was cyberbullied. The situation was handled.

Obviously they killed themselves for a reason. That reason was obviously bullying. People are picked on day in and day out, some more than others and some get nothing but crap. These two girls just couldn't take it anymore because they thought no one was going to do anything for them. They were probably right. If they told anyone about the bullying it would undoubtedly get worse. The only way to fight a bully is with violence, but that would just get them in more trouble. They were stuck in a terrible lose lose situation
